It’s summertime, time to kick back, relax and enjoy the outdoors. But, like all adventures with babies in tow, there are precautions to consider to make ensure that our tiny humans are safe while having fun! We rounded up some of our favorite summer products that make safety a priority.
The first and most obvious summer hazard for babies is the sun. With so many sunscreen options out there, it’s important to understand the ingredients that are safe and most effective for infants. Trip Savvy has a list of the best sunscreens for kids, organic and chemical-free. We recommend sticking with sunscreens that are more natural vs. chemical and that are also safe for the ocean. We found a great list of safe for human and aquatic life from The Chill Times.
Basic rules apply when using; avoid the middle of the day sun, add a bucket hat, sunglasses and UV protective bathing suits and clothing. Infants older than 6 months need at least 15 SPF. Always apply sunscreen at least 30 min before going out and reapply after 80 min. Don’t forget the shades! Sunglasses can protect your baby’s eyes from excessive UV rays. While we know baby’s aren’t inclined to want to keep them on, try Banz sunglasses stay on better than most.
Another pesky seasonal problem is the summertime mosquitoes and bugs. The trend right now is to ensure that bug defense is “deet-free”. Here is a great list of kid-friendly chemical-free and also unassumingly fun mosquito repellents to keep your family bug-bite free this summer!
One sure-fire way to keep germs off of your baby’s feet is to have coverage that you can count on. Our Vivi G’z Baby booties were designed to stay on baby’s feet, solving the missing baby sock and shoe dilemma. Protecting your baby’s feet from bacteria will help prevent germs from spreading to other parts of the body. This is especially important at places like daycare, playdates and other places where the baby would have the opportunity to have their tootsies exposed.
Car Seat Safety
Make your grocery store trips and Target runs safer with TotesBabies car-seat adapter for shopping carts. Created by a mom, TotesBabies is made of a thick, durable material and has adjustable safety straps that secure to the cart. This is truly a genius product that is a game-changer when shopping with your baby.
Last but definitely not least is water and pool safety. Drowning is the leading cause of unintentional death in children ages 1-4. At 6 months old parents can start swimming classes to teach babies how to float in water. Regardless of your baby’s water experience, you should never take your eyes of your babies in the water. Life vests are recommended over water wings because their little arms are less likely to slip out. Empower yourself and learn CPR from a Red Cross near you to ensure that you can act if needed.
